Awards
Philip Zea, Trust Governor and Director of Historic Deerfield, was awarded the 2009 Antique Dealers of America’s Merit Award. Before the presentation of the award, Jane Nylander, Trust Governor and President Emerita of Historic New England, and Luke Berkerdite, past Trust Governor and Editor, Annual Journal of American Furniture, gave their versions of Phil Zea as seen through years of working together. John Keith Russell, ADA President, presented the award saying that Zea is a gifted writer, a staunch promoter of museums and education, and has earned a reputation as one of the most respected authorities in the field.
Jonathan Fairbanks, past President of The Decorative Arts Trust, and Sam Maloof, the legendary studio furniture maker, were given by the Fuller Craft Museum of Brockton, MA, their honored title of “Luminary.” Fairbanks said, “It is I who enjoy the light emanating from all those crafts/artists who listen to their muses while making and dedicating their work for personal and public joy—works with their hands, minds, hearts and souls.” Just three days after the award was made, Sam Maloof, 93, passed away. Trust members will remember our trip to Maloof’s house and studio in California, and how warmly we were welcomed by Sam.
